
About me and my work.
I was born in Kyoto, Japan where I studied English and American Literature. Two years after graduating from Kouka Women’s University in Kyoto, in 1973, I came to England to improve my English and fell in love with the country and the people. After five years I returned to Japan and studied woodblock printing under the master woodblock print artist Takeji Asano. As his student I learned through observation rather than formal teaching methods. I never imagined that I would become an artist and live in a sailing town in Essex when I first left Japan.
With my great knowledge of woodblock printing (or so I thought) I returned to England in 1980 where I met and married Geoffrey Wickham, a sculptor, painter and lecturer who taught me about art and artistic expression. I expressed the opinion that woodblock printing was easy, with which he disagreed. How right he was. Even now after 44 years of printmaking I still find something new every time I work in my studio which Geoffrey and I set up in 1986.
In 2007 I started studying paper making with Mr. Fujimori at Awagami Factory, Tokushima Island, Japan; now a teacher of paper making myself, I enjoy returning each year to spend time at the factory with him and his masters.
I have been teaching woodblock printing classes to small groups at Chapel Studio since 1990 and recently started teaching papermaking too. In 2018 I became a visiting tutor at West Dean College, West Sussex, where I have two classes teaching woodblock printing with a paper making class due to start in Summer 2026.

私と作品について
私は京都に生まれて大学では英米文学を専攻、卒業後2年の1973年に、英語を上達するべく渡英しましたが英国とその人々にすっかりほれ込んでしまいました。5年後に帰国した際、日本のピカソと言われていた恩師、浅野竹ニ先生から木版画を習いました。先生の弟子として昔ながらの方法で先生のされることを見て学ぶという方法で勉強しました。生まれて始めて日本から出たときは、まさか自分がアーティストになって英国エセックス州の町に住むなどとは想像もしていませんでした。木版画の技術と知識をしっかり備えて(と自分ではそう信じて)1980年に英国に戻りそこで出会ったジェフリー ウィッカム と後に 結婚。彼はその当時 彫刻家、芸術家で、大学で美術を教えていたので、芸術と芸術的表現の教授を受けました。木版画は簡単だといった私には全く同意しませんでした。版画を始めてから40年近くなりますが主人が言ったとおり、スタジオで版画の仕事をするたびにいつも何か新しいことを学んでいます。

Techniques
I essentially follow traditional Japanese woodblock printing (Ukiyo-e) techniques but often use modern materials and tools that were never available in those ancient times. My personal aim is to use the boldest possible line and purest possible colour in all my work. Woodblock printing is a long process; designing, tracing, cutting, carving and printing. Sometimes it can take months to complete one piece. Even if I manage to express my feeling and passion in the original drawing, it is possible to lose both by the time I complete the print, so I am always aware of that, and I am very happy if I manage to achieve what I originally set out to do.
Inspiration
My work focuses on human relationships, psychology, the basics of daily life and the relationships between people and the natural world. The sky, water and land give me ideas for shapes and colours but even the texture of a wooden wall or a dirty mark on the floor can be the inspiration of new work as I believe the end result is what matters most. As a Japanese artist who has lived many years in England, my work tries to reconcile the aesthetic sensibilities of the two cultures.
New works
In the next few years I wish to complete the “Dancing wave” series and explore nature in a new set of prints in which I hope I can put more of my humour and the Japanese sense of simplicity into my work.
Having now reached the age of 70, I am very aware of the passing of time but I aim to create at least one or two major pieces before I can no longer complete the strenuous printing process.

技術について
基本的には日本の浮世絵の技法を使っているのですがその当時にはなかった現代的な材料や道具を使うことがあります。大胆な線と出来れば色そのもの(絵の具を混ぜない)を使った作品を心がけています。木版画は時間のかかる仕事です。デザイン、トレース、版木刀で切り込みを入れてから彫ってそれが済むと摺ります。一作出来上がるまで、時には1か月かかります。デザインを作る時点で自分の意向や情熱が表現できていても、完全に作品が摺り終わるまでにそれをなくす可能性もありますから、それを失くさないようにいつも心がけています。摺り終わった時自分が主張したかったことがしっかり作品に表れている時は私にとって一番の喜びです。
インスピレーション
人間関係、心理、日常の世界に存在するものとか、人間と自然界との関係などを追っています。空も水も大地も、形や色に関するアイデアを運んでくれますが、木の壁や床についた汚いシミでさえも私にとってはアイデアのもとになります。技術も大切でしょうが最後の出来上がりが一番大切だと信じています。英国に長年住んできたアーティストとしての私の目的の一つは日本の伝統木版画技法を使って、日英両国の繊細な芸術文化を作品の中で調和することです。
新作
踊る波 シリーズを完成することと、自然に関するシリーズのなかで、もっとユーモアを交えてしかも日本的な簡素なデザインの作品が出来たらと励んでいます。70歳を超えて、時の流れの速さに驚くばかりになりました。大変な作業の版画が出来なくなるまでに1-2作、私自身の大作を作りたいと願っています。
