Story of A-UN

When I was a child I became aware of two statues which often stand at the gates of temples; one has an open mouth and the other has a closed mouth which between them represent “a” and “un”

Aun is an ancient Sanskrit word meaning “the beginning and ending of everything in the universe”, birth and death, action and reaction etc. The reason I like this word is that it includes everything in the universe. Even a little creature like myself is included and of course my favourite animals, insects, plants, fish in my pond and birds in the sky are all equal. So for me the word Aun connects all living things in the universe.

When thinking only about human lives we see that they are really distinct; we each seem to understand and feel things in a different way even when we are experiencing exactly the same situation in the same circumstances. That is why we may think of ourselves as happy or unhappy. Some people reach the end of their lives with a sense of happiness and others unhappiness. People may say we cannot change our fate but is that true? There are many who have changed their fate and had successful lives, so life is always a gamble to a certain extent. Even if you feel you have had an entirely happy life, there will have been some moments of sadness. The opposite is also true, even during the saddest life there will have been some occasions for laughter and happiness.

In this world there is war, prejudice and racial discrimination. Somehow we are hurting this earth and there are many natural disasters. In many parts of the world even today there is a lack of clean water and a shortage of food. In fact children are dying of starvation, yet we talk about animal rights. In this situation I try to reach out and shake hands with everybody in all walks of life. You might call me naïve but I am sure it will not be a waste of effort to express my wish to people at this late point in my life.

One summers’ day I saw hundreds of bees hovering a metre away from a little puddle in our garden. Three or four bees appeared to be trying to push another bee into the puddle. Watching them carefully I suddenly noticed that the bees were trying to rescue the little bee who was drowning in the puddle. So I picked up the poor wet bee with a twig and placed it on a rock. The warm rock dried the wings of the bee very quickly and the bee flew away with the rest of the swarm. If such little creatures can help each other then so can we.

阿吽（あうん）物語

子供の頃からお寺の門の両脇に仁王さんが立っていて一人は口を開けており一人は口をつむんでいることに気が付いていました。つまり口をあいてるのが＜　あ　＞で閉じているのが＜　うん　＞。

＜あうん＞は古代サンスクリット語で　＜宇宙に存在する万物の始めと終わり＞を表す言葉で　誕生と死、とか、物事には課程があり結果につながるという意味があるようです。これを考えると　＜あうん＞というのは宇宙のすべてを含むということなので私は大好きなのです。私自身のように名もない小さな人間ですらそれに含まれているし、もちろん私の大好きな動物も虫も植物も、私の庭の池の鯉も空に飛んでいる鳥も皆含まれている。つまり宇宙の生き物すべてが幸せに生きる権利があって、＜あうん＞という言葉を聞くと、生あるものすべてが平等でつながっているのだなと思うのです。

人間について考えてみると人それぞれですーーー例えば全く同じ環境にあって同じものを見たり聞いたりしても人それぞれに理解の仕方も感じ方も違っているために幸せに感じたり不幸に感じたりします。そのために死期が近づいてきたり、死に直面した時に、良い人生だったと思う人もあればつまらなかった、苦しかったと思う人があるでしょう。運命を変えることなど出来ないとよく人は言いますがそれは本当でしょうか？世の中には必死で頑張って自分の人生を変えて幸せになっている人はいくらでもいます。だから人生はある意味でギャンブルだなと思わざるを得ません。どんなに幸せに生きてきた人でも不幸せに出会ったことがあるはずです。それと同時にどんなに不幸せな人生を生きた人でも笑ったこともあったでしょうし良かったなと幸せに感じたことがあったはずです。

この世界にはまだまだ戦争が耐えないでいる国があり、差別や偏見が今なお世界中に続いています。世界の多くの国でこのDNAの時代に飲料水不足や食糧難がまだ存在しています。実際に子供たちが餓死しているのです。それでも動物愛護という生き物に優しくする気持ちも忘れてはいません。私自身、人間はもとより生き物すべてと握手して一緒に人生を過ごしたいと思います。ナイーブだと思われるかもしれませんが棺桶に片足を突っ込む歳になった人間の最後の望みを表現することは無駄ではないと思うのです。

ある夏の日、庭の水溜まりの周りにミツバチが群れを作ってブンブン飛び回っているのを見つけました。よく見ると一匹のミツバチを３－４匹のミツバチが殺そうとしていました。いや、じっと見ていてハタと気が付いたのですが彼らは水に溺れそうになって困っている仲間を救いあげようといっしょうけいめいなのです。私すばやく横にあった木の枝でそのミツバチを水溜まりから救い上げて小さな岩の上に載せました。夏の気温でその岩は温かかったのでしょう。溺れかけていたミツバチの羽はあっと言う間に乾きました。その間みつばちの群れはそこにたむろして様子を見守っていました。そして羽が乾いて再び飛び上がったミツバチと一緒に楽しそうに、と私は感じたのですが、どこかに飛んでいってしまいました。

そんなに小さな生き物でさえ助け合って生きているのだから私達人間にも助け合いはできるはずでしょう。
